Random thoughts

In my previous column I wrote about Pakistan as I remember it when I came in 1952. There are many more pleasant memories to reminisce on. In this article I would like to dwell on our stay in the Sher Shah area near the Lyari river. We all recently saw on TV and read in the papers about the riots and disturbances there as a result of gang warfare and the murder of Rehman Dakait who was hailed as a benefactor by the local poor community.

Random thoughts

Over the last few days, TV stations have constantly been showing disturbing pictures of fasting men, women and children standing in queue in front of trucks to buy flour or sugar. Even worse are images of distributors beating the same people up to exercise control over the crowd. Even though all this is taking place during Ramazan, no government official has uttered a word against this animal-like behaviour or made an effort to control inflated Ramzan prices.

Random thoughts

In my previous column, I wrote about partition, the Kashmir issue and the treacherous role played by Lord Mountbatten and Sir Radcliffe.
On a number of occasions, both General Musharraf and Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri have issued statements that gave the impression that India was about to hand over Kashmir to Pakistan. Actually, India has always categorically said that Kashmir is an integral part of India. Here I would like to look at how these claims of solving the issue were made and how the Indians were going to give it to us. Let us also not forget Hyderabad, Manavadar and Junagarh also.
