A pleasant childhood, warm relationships at home and with true friends and absence of poverty, together with a good early education, are responsible for keeping my friends and me from many of the vices of life. Random thoughts

In one of my earlier columns I described in detail the importance of metallurgical engineering in the development of an advanced and industrialised country. Mechanical engineering is also of great importance for this development. Random thoughts

Almost a decade ago I was invited as chief guest to an International Conference on Ophthalmology in Lahore. Beside me was seated the president of the Royal Ophthalmological Society of the United Kingdom. Before the conference started he asked me, in a rather amused tone, how it had come about that a nuclear scientist was attending an ophthalmological conference as chief guest.
