During our first trip to Timbuktu in 1998 we saw only one dilapidated hotel. On our second trip we found a new hotel of three-star standard that had been built by a Moroccan married to a lady from Timbuktu.

It was during this trip that we met Abderhamane, who was sitting in the lobby waiting for tourists to guide around. He immediately attracted our attention and we engaged him for the duration of our stay. Since he spent the whole time with us, we naturally came to know more about him. He told us that he had a large family and found it difficult to live off his income during the three to four months that the tourist season lasted.

I would like to start off Part III by quoting the prayer by the scholar Sadi of Timbuktu and the verse written by the city’s intellectual Ahmad Baba.

“In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, the most merciful.

“Praise be to Almighty Allah to Whom alone belongs the Universe, Eternity, Power and Praise, Who encompasses with His knowledge all things. He knows what was and what will be, and if something were to be, how it would be. No atom’s weight (of what occurs) on earth or in heaven escapes Him. He gives power to whomso He wishes, and takes it away from whomso He wishes” (3:26). Unique is He, a powerful, mighty and victorious Sovereign, Who has mastery over His servants through death and annihilation. He is the First, without there being a beginning and the Last, without there being an end. May blessing and peace be upon the master of the first and the last generations, our master and lord Muhammad (PBUH), Seal of the messengers and prophets, and upon his pure and blameless Family and companions, who belong to the elect (of Allah Almighty) and those favoured (by Him). May Allah Almighty ceaselessly and unendingly bless Him and all of them, and grant them peace. Ameen.”

This week I would like to concentrate on Mali’s history Between the 9th and 16th centuries, three great empires rose in the region, Ghana, Mali and Songhai. The Empire of Ghana was made up of what is now Mali and Senegal, with no geographic connection with present-day Ghana. Its capital was at Kumbi, which was about 200 km north of what is Bamako today. In the early days of Islam, many Muslims were forced to migrate to Habsha in this region. This migration is famous in the history of Islam because of the memorable address of Hazrat Jaffer bin Tayyar (RA) to Najashi, the King of Habsha. Hazrat Jaffer (RA) was a cousin of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and elder brother of Hazrat Ali (RA). In his address Hazrat Jaffer (RA) delivered the message of the Prophet (PBUH) and invited the people of Habsha to embrace Islam. Read the rest of this entry »

While we were studying geography at school, I came across two names that always fascinated me, and it almost became an obsession with me to see them one day. The two places of my dreams were Timbuktu in Mali (Africa) and Lhasa in Tibet (China). Timbuktu, we learnt, was a city in the middle of nowhere and Lhasa was on top of the world. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit both places and I would like to share some of the thrill of the experiences of visiting Timbuktu. Parts I and II will deal with some aspects of the geographic and historical backgrounds of the area, Part III will deal with the fascinating city of Timbuktu itself and Part IV will deal with our personal experiences there.
